What should I tweet about? That’s a very good question that you have to ask yourself sooner rather than later. While there is no written rule about what you should tweet about, there are common practices that will increase your chances of being seen as a resourceful person, thus increasing your chances to be followed by many.
Avoid Self Promotion
The most important rule is to avoid blatant self promotion! If you’re on Twitter simply to post links to your “special offers” or “great deals”, or whatever you have to promote, then you’re making a big mistake. DO NOT post links to your affiliate programs or your website all the time. People can smell spam one hundred miles away. I repeat… DO NOT post links to whatever you promote all the time. This will do you more harm than good. We will see later on how to advertise your products on Twitter without looking like a spammer.
Find Interesting Links
I guess the most common use of Twitter is to share links to interesting articles, images, or videos. Depending on what industry you’re in, there has to be a few good sources that produce good articles. Simply send links to these articles. I usually tweet the title of the article, the link, as well as a short comment about it. Just like this:

You’ll know if you’re on the mark because you’ll get positive feedback in the form of replies, retweets, and direct messages.
Reply To Your Tweeps
If you see that any of the people you’re following are asking a question or are looking for feedback on something, try to reply to them. Helping them out will most likely get you noticed by them. Next thing you know, they may reply to you or “publicly” thank you for your great advice, which would in term end up having you get more followers.
I personally try to answer 4-5 people a day. I look for questions about my area of expertise and I give an honest answer. Sometimes, the person doesn’t even acknowledge me. But sometimes however, people send a tweet asking all their followers to follow me because I give great advice. Remember, it’s all about being social!
Engage Your Tweeps
Engaging your followers is very important because it shows that their opinion matters. You make them feel important by asking them what they think on any given topic. When you make them feel important, people would do anything for you. In the future, these people might be some of your most loyal followers!
Here is a good example of a tweet I sent yesterday:
This tweet got me about 20 replies in less than 10 minutes. People were actually glad I made them part of my real life. Besides, winning their trust, I also go great advice from it.
If anyone replies to you, make sure to publicly thank them or simply send them a direct message.
Retweet And People Will Retweet You
If you see something interesting, retweet it. Retweeting shows once again that you give importance to what people are saying. The more you retweet others, the more they will retweet you!
Variety Is The Key
Do not just tweet about your industry. If you’re into gardening, don’t just tweet about gardening. Obviously, gardening should be your main focus, but from time to time, tweet about something different.
Link to a variety of things (including your own) both on-topic and off-topic. Too much of any one thing will drive people away, so keep a balance to your mix of tweets. Think of it as you in the real life. You don’t just talk about one topic, right? It’s the same on Twitter!
Also, you don’t have to tweet about articles only. Tweet links to videos, music, images. Mix it up!
